Plot
The Things They Carried is a novel of twenty interconnected stories by Tim O'Brien. Each of the short pieces utilizes elements of courage and focuses in the Vietnam War experience.
The first member of the Alpha Company to die is Ted Lavender, a “grunt,” or low-ranking soldier, who deals with his anxiety about the war by taking tranquilizers and smoking marijuana. Lavender is shot in the head on his way back from going to the bathroom, and his superior, Lieutenant Jimmy Cross, blames himself for the tragedy.
"I stood up to screaming patriots, and burned my draft card. I protested and marched, screamed and cried, told my
generation to stop, don't go, this was wrong. I ended up a C.O. [conscientious objector] doing 2 years of bedpans, not smoking dope in Canada. I think that I, and those like me, are the true patriots, the true dissenters, who tried to stop 50,000 of our generation from coming home in bags." (Barry Patz)
Barry wrote a letter telling how he was drafted for vietnam war. He mentioned how he protested to not send people to war , he tried to save lives of soldiers. Barry's Experience is very similar to story of Tim's when Tim was drafted first he didn't want to risk his life but he didn't wanted to become a coward so he left . The way Tim O' Brien reacted to that situation was really different.
" U.S. soldiers kill hundreds of Vietnamese civilians in the town .." (Jennifer Rosenberg)
Jennifer's vietnam war timeline and the story in The Things They carried are similar as in the novel they mention how soldiers went and shot the people and jennifer's timeline states the same thing that happened in the war.
